The Weather

The heat of incandescent lava and the high summer temperatures contrast with the cold winter weather characterized by strong winds especially in high areas: large stretches of land are covered with thick blankets of snow. The extensive perimeter of the mountain together with its 360 degree exposure of the slopes, which are free from any natural physical obstacle make the climatic situation very variable. In consequence, Etna features enchanting scenes and strong odors in a continuous unexpected evolution during the year. Nevertheless, during winter, in the sunny days from February to May, the regular meeting with the snow cap is always respected, and those who fling themselves along the ski slopes and then dive into the Ionian Sea within the span of a few hours are numerous: it seems like a fairy-tale, but it is reality!
