Standing on an outcrop in the Alcantara Valley, in medieval times its position
made it a stronghold and resulted in the building of the Castel Leune (hence the name),
feud of the Lamia family since 1283. In its tight network of narrow roads it maintains its
medieval appearance. Of note are the many buildings from the 1700s together with the
mother church (San Pietro) with an old apse and paintings by Antonio Bonaccorsi. At the
highest point of the town are the ruins of the castle with fourteenth-century mullioned
windows. The Alcantara Valley below Castiglione marks the northern border of the province.
Here in Contrada Cuba there is an ancient Christian chapel and nearby was Monte Moio, the
eccentric crater of Etna which in prehistoric times vomited the lava-flow that reached
Cape Schisò. |
