Inserted in the wonderful Villa Comunale setting, with the entrance from the eighteenth-century theatre, by Natale Bonaiuto from Siracusa (1792), the museum, after a series of events, was open to the public in July 18th 1965 and today, together with the one of Faenza, is the principal Italian museum devoted to ceramics. In four big halls, ceramics of various ages are exhibited, from the prehistoric age till the beginning of the twentieth century, they include not only productions of the workshop of Caltagirone but also of other places of the island. In the section devoted to the Ancient World, there are manufactured articles produced during the prehistoric and protohistoric age in Caltagirone and in other places of Sicily. In the Medieval section there are ceramics from Siracusa, which can be ascribed to the X-XI century and found at the beginning of the century in the island of Ortigia, in the area of the Tempio di Apollo. The ceramics produced in Palermo are represented by pitchers and jars. Ceramic productions dating back to the XVI century and coming from Caltagirone, found in the town or in the remains of furnaces inside the church of S. Agata are exhibited in the Postmedieval or Modern section.
