The Museo Civico di Scienze
Naturali is located in a side of the raised-floor of
the Institute "Santa Giovanna Antida".
From the entrance hall you pass into a big corridor where
there are six hanging showcases; the first three show
butterflies, belonging to a suborder of the Rhopalocera
captured in most part in Sicily. In hall 1 we find
numerous naturalistic findings (fossils, minerals, rocks,
shells). The examples of Sicilian Pleistocene fauna, many
ammonites and some fossil fish, are of great importance.
The second showcase contains some volcanic products such
as volcanic tuff which keeps the mark of a flintstone.
The other halls of the museum have a huge ornithological
collection. You can see all the species which normally
nest in Sicily and some extinct birds or those which are
almost extinct in Sicily such as the Black Partridge, the
Meadow Hen, the Sea-Gull, the Eagle-Owl, the Lammergeyer,
the Sultun Chicken, the Green Woodpecker and the Black
Woodpecker, the Bearded Tit. |
