A high tower, vaguely squat but
imposing, the ruins of a fortified structure with a
quadrilateral plan, bought by the Town-Council in 1920
and then used as prison till 1958, when it was
transformed in museum, after an important restoration:
thence the Archeological Museum of Adrano has usual
characteristics for Sicily, those of museum-monument; in
fact, it is situated inside a castle, the so called of
the "gran Conte Ruggero", dating back
the XI century and erected for Ruggero I, Count of Sicily
and father of Ruggero II, who in 1070 had taken away
Adrano from the Arabic domination. The museum is divided
in four sections: the main body is occupied by the
Archeological Museum, while the other parts are reserved
to the picture-gallery of AdernĂ² (ancient name for
Adrano), to a contemporary art gallery and to a museum
whose theme is etnoantropology, devoted to local
cratsmanship. The archeological section has a great
number of findings of different ages, from the Neolithic
to the arabian-norman period. |
